DEMOCRACY & GOOD GOVERNANCE
GAT was founded at a very critical period of transition in Nigeria. During the worst of military authoritarian rule to the transition to democratic governance. So far, GAT has observed, participated and contributed to democratic processes that have seen two re-elections taking place. Civic education, capacity building for female politicians and advocacy for peaceful, free and fair elections that allow women to fully and effectively participate have been the focus of GAT activities.

GENDER
This is a cross-cutting theme that runs through all the thematic areas of GAT activities. But here, gender which refers to socially constructed roles and responsibilities of men and women stands alone as a concept that is generic and needs to be understood to be applied to any issue. Because of current disparities, equal treatment of women and men is insufficient as a strategy for gender equality. Achieving gender equality will require dismantling patriarchal structures, establishing and strengthening institutional practices and social relations through which gender equity is achieved. It also requires a strong voice for women in shaping their societies especially in a country like Nigeria which is patriarchal in nature. GAT organizes sensitization and training programmes to change discriminatory beliefs, attitudes and behaviour

HIV/AIDS
GAT builds the capacity of individuals and groups on HIV/AIDS, creating awareness of the disease, and its prevention and eradication. By reaching out to these vulnerable populations and engaging them in workshops, retreats, and self-help groups we have significantly increased their knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues, treatments and services. This work continues to produce tangible results, with strong indications of a decrease in risk-taking behaviour. With greater self-esteem, peers have come together to demand rights to health services and advocate against day-to-day stigma and discrimination.

HUMAN/WOMEN’S RIGHTS
GAT is driven by a commitment to solutions. We use human rights to advance social, environmental, and economic justice, understanding that human rights are not a hierarchy, but an indivisible set of standards for all people to enjoy. GAT's focus is on delivering results - meeting immediate, local needs and creating sustainable, long-term alternatives. Through our programs in peace building, women's health/freedom from violence, and economic and environmental justice, GAT researches and develops innovative social and political strategies that deliver resources and support to women and families, use human rights advocacy to promote social justice, research and offer alternative solutions to educate and inspire people to action, and work for an equitable distribution of resources to sustain social change.

PEACE & HUMAN SECURITY
GAT's Peace & Human Security program works to make government activities relevant and accountable to the people it is meant to serve. GAT brings men and women who work for social change at the community level into the process of creating and improving peace & security by providing training and capacity building opportunities.
