OVERVIEW
Gender Awareness Trust (GAT), formerly known as Gender Action Team was established in Kaduna State of Nigeria 2000 as an independent, not-for-profit, research, training, advocacy and capacity building organization. The purpose was to promote peace and build the capacities of women and youth to fully and effectively participate in decision making processes that affect them and their communities. GAT then realized that building the capacity of women without dismantling limiting patriarchal structures would still rob them of the opportunity to contribute to change.
Changing beliefs, attitudes and behavior on the part of both men and women are approaches through which gender equity and then sustainable development can be achieved to the benefit of all. GAT engages in activities on various levels: Community, Zonal, National, Regional and International. GAT belongs to several networks with other organization which have similar interests in ensuring sustainable development, equality, participation, gender equity, peace and security. In August 2007, GAT opened a second office in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory as part of its strategy to fully engage in policy advocacy and National discourse.
